   Star Wars Chess is a 1993 chess-playing video game developed by The Software Toolworks, based on the Star Wars film franchise and published by Mindscape for DOS, Sega CD and Windows 3.x. A 3DO Interactive Multiplayer version was planned but never released.
   The game is heavily inspired by Battle Chess, a popular PC chess game of the era. The characters appear in the places of normal chessmen on an isometric view of a Star-Wars-themed chessboard, with the black pieces portrayed by 'The Dark Side' (Empire-affiliated and antagonistic characters) and the white pieces portrayed by 'The Rebel Force' (Rebellion-affiliated characters.)

The rules of normal chess apply. When one piece captures another in a chess move, the screen fades to a brief animated battle in which the capturing piece vanquishes the captured one, in an over-the-top cartoonishly-animated style. The game can also be played in standard computer-chess mode, with normal chessmen icons on a 2D board, without the battle animations.

   The chess pieces are represented as follows:

• Kings - Luke Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine
• Queens - Princess Leia and Darth Vader
• Bishops - C-3PO and Boba Fett (Chewbacca sets Boba Fett on fire)
• Knights - Chewbacca and Tusken raider
• Rooks - Yoda and AT-ST
• Pawns - R2-D2 and stormtrooper

This ver­sion of Star Wars Chess was de­sig­ned for per­so­nal com­pu­ters with o­pe­ra­ting sys­tem MS-DOS (Mi­cro­soft Disk O­pe­ra­ting Sys­tem), which was o­pe­ra­ting sys­tem de­ve­lo­ped by Mi­cro­soft in 1981. It was the most wi­de­ly-used o­pe­ra­ting sys­tem in the first half of the 1990s. MS-DOS was sup­plied with most of the IBM com­pu­ters that pur­cha­sed a li­cen­se from Mi­cro­soft. Af­ter 1995, it was pu­s­hed out by a gra­phi­cal­ly mo­re ad­van­ced sys­tem - Win­dows and its de­ve­lop­ment was ce­a­sed in 2000. At the ti­me of its grea­test fa­me, se­ve­ral thou­sand ga­mes de­sig­ned spe­ci­fi­cal­ly for com­pu­ters with this sys­tem we­re cre­a­ted.
